How hard is the PE Power exam?
Harder than the reputation suggests. PE Electrical and Computer: Power has the lowest first-time pass rate of any PE depth most engineers sit — 58%, against 61–69% on the FE and 74% on PE Mechanical HVAC. It is one of the few licensure exams where a competent, experienced engineer can walk in genuinely underprepared without knowing it.

The specification changed in October 2025
NCEES launched new specifications for the PE Electrical and Computer exams in October 2025. This matters more than it sounds: the specification is what tells you how many questions each topic is worth, and therefore where your study hours should go. If you are working from a book, course, or question bank assembled before that date, verify it against the current specification at ncees.org before you trust its weighting.
What the exam actually asks of you
PE Power is 80 questions across 8 hours of exam time, inside a 9-hour appointment. It is closed book: your references are the NCEES PE Power Reference Handbook plus the code volumes supplied on-screen. The fee is $425, paid to NCEES, and you get one attempt per testing window with a maximum of three in any 12 months.
Six minutes per question sounds generous after the FE's three. It is not, because the problems are longer and a good share of them are really navigation problems: find the right table, apply the right code rule, carry the right per-unit base through three steps without slipping. It is a codes exam wearing a theory exam's clothes
A large share of the paper turns on the NEC and NESC. Engineers who prepare by revising power-systems theory - and who rarely touch the code books in their day job - discover on exam day that they are slow at exactly the thing the exam rewards: looking a rule up and applying it correctly under time.

Per-unit and symmetrical components punish small slips
These topics are unforgiving: choose the wrong base, or mis-handle a sequence network, and a question you fundamentally understand still scores zero. There is no partial credit anywhere on the exam.

Protection and coordination are unfamiliar to most day jobs
Relay coordination, TCC curves, and one-line interpretation are core to the exam and peripheral to most engineers' actual work. That gap is where the 42% who fail usually lose the exam.

The reference handbook is not a textbook
It gives you equations, not derivations or worked examples. If your first serious use of it is on exam day, you will spend minutes hunting that you cannot afford.
How to prepare for it
- Practice with the handbook and code books open from day one. Speed of lookup is a scoreable skill on this exam, and it only comes from repetition.
- Drill the topics your job does not give you: protection and coordination, symmetrical components, per-unit. Comfort at work is not evidence of readiness here.
- Work from questions that look like the exam - one-lines, phasor diagrams, TCC curves - not from clean textbook problems that skip the diagram entirely.
- Check every study resource against the current (post-October-2025) specification before you trust its topic weighting.
- Sit at least one full 80-question timed mock. Eight hours is an endurance event, and pacing is a skill you should not first practise on exam day.
