How long is the FE exam? From check-in to results

The FE exam is 5 hours and 20 minutes of exam time for 110 questions, inside an appointment NCEES gives as 6 hours. NCEES also asks you to arrive 30 minutes early, so plan on about six and a half hours at the test center. This page covers every clock on the FE: how the exam time runs, the break, what happens when time runs out, how long results take, when you can retake and what expires. What the exam costs is a separate guide, and so is how long to study for it.

Second half of the examWhatever time the first half didn't use. What's left of the 5 h 20 min

NCEES's FE exam page gives the appointment as 6 hours. The table in its Examinee Guide lists 5 hours 55 minutes, which is what the four parts add up to. With the 30-minute early arrival, that's about six and a half hours at the test center. Both sums are ours.

One clock for the whole 5 hours 20 minutes

You get all 320 minutes at the start. NCEES splits the exam into two sections but doesn't time them separately. After about half the questions, you're asked to review and submit them, and once you do, you can't go back to them. Time the first half doesn't use carries into the second.

  • At an even pace, 320 minutes for 110 questions is about 2.9 minutes a question, so you'd submit the first half about 2 hours 40 minutes in. That's our arithmetic, not an NCEES figure, but it's the checkpoint worth watching.
  • If time runs out before you submit, NCEES still scores every answer you've marked.
  • A wrong answer costs nothing: NCEES counts correct answers and makes no deduction for wrong ones. So our advice is to answer every question, even with a guess, before the clock ends.
  • The scheduled break doesn't come out of the 320 minutes, and skipping it adds nothing to them.

The tutorial at the start shows how to open the on-screen reference handbook. What that book does and doesn't print is in our handbook guide.

The break: 25 minutes, and the clock doesn't wait

  • The scheduled break is optional and comes once, after you submit the first half. You may leave the building during it.
  • You can take less than 25 minutes, but the minutes you don't use don't go back on the exam clock.
  • Come back late and the second half is shorter by however late you are. When the 25 minutes end, the exam clock starts again on its own.
  • You can also take an unscheduled break at any time by raising your hand. The exam clock keeps running through it, and you can't leave the building.

Results take about 7–10 business days

NCEES's FE exam page says results are typically available within 7–10 business days. Its scoring page and its Examinee Guide put it as 7–10 days. NCEES emails you when the result is ready, and you read it in your MyNCEES account, with a link to your licensing board's instructions for what comes next.

The result is pass or fail. If you fail, you also get a diagnostic report showing how you did in each major topic. NCEES doesn't hand-check answers on its computer-based exams, and it doesn't give you the questions or answers back. How to plan a retake from the report is in the retake guide.

There is no published passing score

NCEES scores the number of questions you answer correctly and turns it into a scaled score, which evens out small differences in difficulty between versions of the exam. That score is compared with a minimum ability level that subject-matter experts set. NCEES doesn't publish the passing score; its Examinee Guide says the score varies slightly with difficulty. No set share of candidates is meant to pass, and first-time and repeat takers are graded to the same standard.

So a percentage quoted somewhere as the FE passing score isn't a published NCEES figure.

FE exam dates: you choose your own

There's no national FE exam date. The FE is a computer-based exam offered year-round at NCEES-approved Pearson test centers. When you schedule in MyNCEES, you choose a test center and pick from its open dates, and you can look at other centers if none suit you.

  • Seats go first come, first served. NCEES says to schedule as far ahead as you can, and at least one business day before the exam.
  • To move or cancel an appointment, do it at least 48 hours ahead. Pearson charges $50 for either.
  • Some boards must approve you before you can register, and that wait comes first. Your board's entry on NCEES's FE exam page says what yours asks for.
  • Some NCEES exams run on only one or two days a year. The FE isn't one of them.

How soon you can retake

NCEES allows one attempt per testing window and no more than three attempts in any 12-month period. The windows are January–March, April–June, July–September and October–December, and some boards have a stricter rule.

So the wait after a fail depends on the date of the attempt: the next window can be a day away or up to three months away. That's our reading of the rule, and the cost guide works an example.

Can you take the FE exam online?

No. NCEES says its exams are administered only at Pearson test centers. You can test at any NCEES-approved center in the United States, its territories or Canada. If you're approved through an organization in another country, other than Canada, you test at an approved center in that country. Even NCEES's exception for candidates on active U.S. military duty outside North America and the U.S. territories, or whose spouse is, means an approved test center abroad, not a test at home.

Does the FE exam expire?

Two different things could expire, and NCEES's pages put a time limit on only one of them.

  • Your approval to test does. Once you're approved, you have 12 months to take the exam. If you neither take it nor cancel your registration in that time, you forfeit the registration fee.
  • A passing result: NCEES's FE exam page, its scoring page and its Examinee Guide give no expiry date for one. What you do after a pass, and by when, is up to your licensing board, and your result comes with a link to its instructions.

Every FE discipline runs the same clock

NCEES gives one format for the FE: its exam page and the table in its Examinee Guide list a single FE entry, 110 questions in 5 hours 20 minutes. FE Civil and FE Mechanical are no longer than the rest. Only the topics differ, and how many questions each one gets. If you're still choosing, see which FE exam to take.

Common questions

5 hours and 20 minutes of exam time for 110 questions, inside an appointment NCEES gives as 6 hours. The appointment also holds a 2-minute nondisclosure agreement, an 8-minute tutorial and an optional 25-minute break. NCEES also asks you to arrive 30 minutes early.
How long is the break on the FE exam?
25 minutes, taken once, after you submit about half the questions. It's optional. Minutes you don't use don't go back on the exam clock, and if you return late, the lost minutes come off the second half.
How long does it take to get FE exam results?
Typically 7–10 business days, according to NCEES's FE exam page. NCEES emails you when the result is ready, and you read it in your MyNCEES account.

Does a passing FE result expire?
NCEES's FE exam page, its scoring page and its Examinee Guide give no expiry date for a pass. What does run out is the approval to test: once you're approved, you have 12 months to take the exam. After a pass, your licensing board sets the next steps.
Is the FE Civil or FE Mechanical exam longer than the others?
No. NCEES gives one format for the FE: 110 questions in 5 hours 20 minutes, whichever discipline you take. Only the topics and how many questions each gets differ.
