How to prepare for the PE Mechanical HVAC and Refrigeration exam

Three published facts decide how to prepare for this exam, and none of them is a secret. NCEES tells you how many of the 80 questions each knowledge area is worth. It tells you that the only reference in the room is one handbook, on screen. And the clock works out to 6 minutes a question. Everything below is what follows from those three — with the parts that are our judgement marked as ours.

1. Let the specification set your budget

NCEES publishes a question range for each of the four knowledge areas. That is the closest thing to an answer key for "what should I study" that exists, and it is free. Here it is, with the practice topics that sit under each area:

HVAC and Refrigeration Distribution and Systems

20–30 questions

Question ranges: the official NCEES PE Mechanical: HVAC and Refrigeration CBT specification. The percentages use the midpoint of each range and the day counts are our arithmetic on them; the grouping of topics under each area is ours.

The number that surprises people is the third one. HVAC Loads and Psychrometrics — the chart everyone dreads — is 18–27 questions. HVAC Equipment and Components is 24–36. If your plan gives psychrometrics a month and cooling towers an afternoon, the plan is arguing with the specification, and the specification writes the exam.

2. A twelve-week plan

This plan is ours, not NCEES's. NCEES publishes no study hours and no study schedule for any exam. The split below is arithmetic on the published question ranges; the order and the two mock weeks are our judgement. Stretch or compress the calendar to fit your life — keep the proportions.

The weights tell you how much time an area deserves. They do not tell you when to study it. We put the third-heaviest area first, for one reason: the two heavier areas are full of problems that assume it.

  1. HVAC Loads and Psychrometrics

    Days 1–18 · 18 days

    First, because so much else leans on it: a cooling coil's duty is an enthalpy difference, a cooling tower is judged against wet-bulb, an enthalpy wheel is rated on humidity ratio. Learn the chart until a process line is routine — then stop on the day the budget says stop. This is the area candidates overspend on.

  2. HVAC Equipment and Components

    Days 19–42 · 24 days

    The largest block, because it is the largest share of the paper. Chillers and heat pumps, boilers and combustion, cooling towers, heat exchangers and coils, pumps, fans and compressors, energy recovery. Work from equipment schedules and performance curves, not from tidy textbook givens.

  3. HVAC and Refrigeration Distribution and Systems

    Days 43–62 · 20 days

    Duct and pipe sizing, ventilation and air quality, hydronic and steam systems, controls, and the refrigeration cycle. These problems are where unit slips happen — in. w.g. against psi, cfm against lb/h — so write units on every line.

  4. Supportive Knowledge (HVAC and Refrigeration)

    Days 63–70 · 8 days

    Codes and standards, acoustics and vibration, economic analysis, electrical concepts. Small, and the most lookup-driven area of the four — which makes it the cheapest place on the paper to pick up questions if you know where each table lives in the handbook.

  5. Two full timed mocks, then repair

    Weeks 11–12

    Sit 80 questions in 8h, with only the handbook PDF open, at least twice. After each one, sort every miss by knowledge area and by cause — did not know it, could not find it, ran out of time, arithmetic — and spend the days between on the biggest pile.

3. Study with the only book you will have

This is a closed-book exam with one exception: NCEES supplies an electronic copy of the NCEES PE Mechanical Reference Handbook inside the exam software, along with any design standards the specification lists. NCEES states that these are the only reference materials you may use, and that you cannot bring personal copies of anything into the room. Your bookshelf stays at home — every marked-up text and binder on it.

What that means for preparation is simple and widely ignored: get the handbook through your MyNCEES account on day one (NCEES does not sell a printed copy), and solve every practice problem with that PDF as your only source. Three habits follow.

  • Use the handbook's notation and its version of each equation, even where you learned a different form. On exam day the unfamiliar form is the only one on the screen.
  • Learn where things live, not just what they say. A search that returns forty hits for a common word is not a lookup; knowing the chapter is.
  • When a method you rely on is not in the handbook, find out now. Either it can be derived from what is printed, or a question that needs it must supply it — and a problem you can only solve from a shelf reference is one you cannot solve in the room.

One detail from the specification is worth planning around: it names heating, cooling, humidification and dehumidification processes at sea level, at 5,000-ft elevation, and at low temperature. Practise on more than the one sea-level chart you know by heart.

4. Train for 6 minutes a question

80 questions in 8h of exam time is 6 minutes each, inside a 9h appointment that also holds the nondisclosure agreement, an 8-minute tutorial and a 50-minute scheduled break. That average hides the real shape of the day: some questions are one lookup and ninety seconds, and some are a four-step coil or cycle calculation that will take ten.

Our advice, and it is only that: from week three onward, time every practice set. Take the questions you can finish on a first pass, flag the long ones, and come back. The habit you are building is not speed — it is refusing to spend fifteen minutes on a single question while four easy ones sit unread behind it.

5. Practise on problems shaped like the exam's

Depth-exam problems tend to arrive with an equipment schedule, a system schematic or a chart, in mixed units — and the wrong answers worth fearing are the ones a predictable slip produces: a missed conversion, the wrong chart line, gauge for absolute. Clean end-of-chapter problems train none of that. Common questions

How long should I study for the PE HVAC exam?
NCEES publishes no recommended study time for any PE exam, so any number you read — including ours — is a judgement, not a fact. Ours is twelve weeks: 70 study days split across the four knowledge areas in proportion to the questions NCEES allocates to each, then two weeks of full timed mocks. If you work with HVAC systems every day you may need less; if you have been away from psychrometrics and refrigeration cycles for years, start earlier rather than study longer per day.
What should I study first for the PE HVAC exam?
Start with HVAC Loads and Psychrometrics, because coil, cooling-tower and energy-recovery problems all build on it — but cap it at its share. NCEES gives it 18–27 of the 80 questions, against 24–36 for HVAC Equipment and Components. The specification sets how much time an area deserves; what it builds on sets when to study it. That ordering is our recommendation, not NCEES's.
Can I bring my own references to the PE HVAC exam?
No. NCEES supplies an electronic copy of the NCEES PE Mechanical Reference Handbook, together with any design standards the exam specification lists, inside the exam software. NCEES states these are the only reference materials that can be used and that you may not bring personal copies of any material into the exam room. You can get a copy of the handbook beforehand through your MyNCEES account; NCEES does not sell a printed one.
How much time do you get per question on the PE HVAC exam?
6 minutes on average: 80 questions in 8h of exam time. The 9h appointment also holds the nondisclosure agreement, an 8-minute tutorial and a 50-minute scheduled break. Six minutes is enough for a well-practised problem and not enough for one where you are meeting the handbook table for the first time — which is the whole case for practising with the handbook open.
Is psychrometrics the biggest part of the PE HVAC exam?
No. HVAC Loads and Psychrometrics is 18–27 of the 80 questions. HVAC Equipment and Components is 24–36, and HVAC and Refrigeration Distribution and Systems is 20–30. Psychrometrics is the topic candidates fear most, which is why it tends to get more study time than the specification justifies.
What does the PE HVAC exam cost, and how often can I retake it?
The NCEES fee is $400 per attempt, payable to NCEES; your state licensing board may charge its own fees on top. The exam is computer-based and offered year-round at Pearson VUE test centres. NCEES allows one attempt per testing window and no more than three attempts in a 12-month period.
